ChargePoint Applauds Governor Brown For Signing AB 1236 to Streamline Permitting of Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

Campbell, Calif. – Pasquale Romano, CEO of ChargePoint, the world's largest electric vehicle (EV) charging network, today commended California Governor Jerry Brown for signing AB 1236 and Assembly members David Chiu and Evan Low for their leadership in proliferating access to EV charging stations in an effort to accelerate EV adoption. AB 1236 (Chiu and Low) streamlines the permitting process for EV charging stations.

Currently, one of the biggest impediments to deployment of EV charging infrastructure is the lack of certainty and uniformity in local permitting processes. California's EV permitting structure is a patchwork of various regulations and requirements that vary from city to city and county to county. Requirements in one city can differ drastically from a neighboring city even though the same EV charging station is being installed in the same type of commercial building, multi-unit development or single family home. This hinders prospective EV buyers' ability to understand the administrative burden and the cost of installing EV charging stations before buying an EV.

"AB 1236 is a great step towards ensuring all communities have accessible and affordable EV charging infrastructure," said Romano. "By improving and streamlining the permitting process for EV charging stations, AB 1236 will not only result in lowering the cost of installation, but it will also help California reach its aggressive and worthy greenhouse gas emission reduction goals. Governor Brown, Assembly member Chiu, Assembly member Low and the California State Legislature have shown continued leadership around electric vehicles and charging infrastructure – and that leadership is resulting in a cleaner environment and more jobs."
