FAQ

What is ChargePoint?

ChargePoint® is the world’s most advanced and easy-to-use electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. Electric vehicle charging is delivered via ChargePoint charging stations which cover the entire range of Level I, Level II, and Level III electric vehicle charging needs. ChargePoint charging stations are located where you work, shop and play worldwide.

How do I find a ChargePoint charging station?

All ChargePoint charging stations can be located on the website, mobile apps and in-car navigation systems. The map displays which stations are in use, available or allow reservations, so you can always be sure you have a spot to charge when you arrive.

Can I request a charging station to be installed near me?

Absolutely! ChargePoint charging stations are being installed everywhere. If you don’t find a charging station near your favorite commute route, shopping or work location, let us know by clicking here.

How do I access the charging station to charge my electric vehicle?

The ChargePoint stations can be easily accessed with any of the following options:

  • ChargePoint cards
  • Contactless credit cards
  • Phone call to the customer service number on every ChargePoint station

How much does it cost to use a ChargePoint station?

Owners of ChargePoint stations have the option to offer charging services for free or to set a fee for accessing their stations. Many ChargePoint stations continue to be free. All stations can be accessed with a ChargePoint card, a contactless credit card or by calling the toll free number printed on the front of the charging station.

Who sets the price to access ChargePoint stations?

Owners of ChargePoint stations have the option to offer charging services for free or to set a fee for accessing their stations. Prices appear on the station display, on the Google maps found on www.chargepoint.com, the ChargePoint mobile app and in-car navigation systems.

How do I obtain or activate a ChargePoint card?

A ChargePoint card may be obtained for a small fee by creating an account on-line at www.chargepoint.com. Creating a ChargePoint account will allow you to set up mobile and email notifications for vehicle charging updates. You will also be able to use the simple dashboard to track charging times, charging locations, fees (if any), energy (kWh) used, greenhouse gases saved and greenhouse emissions prevented.

How do I pay for access to a ChargePoint charging station with my ChargePoint card?

You will log into your ChargePoint account and provide a credit card number that will be billed to keep your ChargePoint card “filled up”. You will select an initial fill up amount and then each time you use the card, your account will be debited for the ChargePoint station access fee. When your account runs low, your account will automatically be refilled by billing your credit card. The refill amount will be automatically adjusted over time to match your usage so as to require only one credit card billing per month.

What can I do with my ChargePoint account?

Your ChargePoint account allows you to tailor ChargePoint charging services to your needs. For example, ChargePoint can notify you by text message or email when your vehicle is completely charged or if your charging session is interrupted for any reason. With your ChargePoint account, you can adjust your notification settings, edit your account profile or access billing and energy savings reports.

What are notifications, and why are they important?

Notifications help you stay aware of your electric vehicle charging status at all times. You can set up mobile and email notifications for:

  • Charging complete
  • Charging interrupted
  • Reservation reminders

How are greenhouse gas (GhG) savings computed?

ChargePoint uses EPA estimates to derive a formula relating GhG savings to the amount of energy delivered to the vehicle from the charging station. The following estimates are used in the calculations, with references:

  • Driving an ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) vehicle emits 8.8 kg CO2/gal (19.4 lbs CO2/gal). [1]
  • The US Passenger Car average efficiency for ICE vehicles is 23.9 mi/gal (mpg) [2]
  • An Electric Vehicle (EV) has an average efficiency of 5.0 mi/kWh. [Note: This is a ChargePoint estimate based on data for several types of Electric Vehicles.]
  • Electricity generation, for the mix consumed in the CAMX (WECC California) region, emits 0.49 kg CO2/kWh (1.08 lbs CO2/kWh) [3]
  • CO2 is 95% of GHG emissions [4]

Combining these numbers yields 1.42 kg/kWh (3.13 lbs/kWh) of GhG Savings for the CAMX (WECC California) region. Future releases will allow for customization of the GhG formula to reflect regional differences in electricity generation.

Is the network Open?

Absolutely! ChargePoint is open to all drivers, all electric vehicle types and hardware from multiple manufacturers.
