How to Charge
It’s easy to think that you can just buy an electric vehicle (EV), show up at any public charging station and plug in. But there are a few things that you should know before you start charging, so you don’t try to fit the wrong connector in your new EV, or (worse) run out of juice while trying to find a station.
How to Charge Your EV on ChargePoint
Before you start charging, find the right station using the ChargePoint mobile app or online app. If you don’t know how to find a station, check out How to Find an EV Charging Station with ChargePoint.
Tip: Make sure to turn off your EV and open your charge port lid and cap before charging. There should be a button or release for the charge port lid in your EV, like for a fuel door.
Step 1: Tap In
Tap your ChargePoint card or your phone (you must be signed in to the mobile app) on the station to start a charge. This will unlock the charging connector so you can remove it from the charging station. You can also tap the orange “Start Charge” button in the station information page in the mobile app.
Step 2: Lift the Connector
Push the button to lift the connector out of the holster on the station.
Step 3: Plug In (and Check In)
Plug the connector into your EV and hit the blue button to start charging. Check your EV’s indicator to make sure you are charging (often there are lights on the dashboard to show this).
Step 4: Do Your Thing
Relax and go about your day. You can track your charging in the app if you want. We’ll send you a notification when your car is done charging (if notifications are on for your account).
Step 5: Tap Out When you get back to your car, tap your card or phone and push the blue button to confirm that you want to end your session. The station will show you how much it cost, and if you’re a member with receipts enabled, we’ll send you a receipt with your charging details.
Don’t forget to unplug the connector and put it back in the holster. Then, drive away happier in your fully charged EV.
How much will it cost?
Always make sure to check the mobile app and the display on each station to see what the rates are, and if they change over time. ChargePoint doesn’t own stations, we just make them, so station managers set their own rates. Sometimes charging rates will change over time, so make sure to check every station, every time, to avoid any surprises.

How do I pay?
When you create your account, you provide a payment method. We’ll charge you $10 to make sure you have a balance on file and you’re ready to charge at any station when you need to. If you only use free stations, you’ll never be charged.
