Home Charging Basics

What is Level 2 charging and why do I need it at home?

Most EVs come with a “Level 1” charger that uses a standard 110-volt outlet to add about 6 to 8 km of electric driving Range Per Hour of charging. While it’s convenient to plug in at home, Level 1 charging might not be fast enough to give you confidence that you’ll consistently have the charge you need. Faster “Level 2” chargers use 240 volts of electricity to deliver as many as 60 km of Range Per Hour, or 9X faster than Level 1 charging. Having a faster charger at home gives you peace of mind that you can get where you need to go. Plus, charging at home can help you save money by charging at night when energy may be cheaper.

Which home charger should I pick?

ChargePoint Home Flex is our newest, fastest and most advanced home charger designed to work for all EV drivers. Adding up to 60 kilometers of Range Per Hour of charging, Flex can be installed at 16A to 50A, allowing drivers to pick the speed that's right for them and their home’s electrical supply. This lets you charge as fast as possible and helps avoid or minimize electrical upgrades. Flex comes with a 7-meter charging cable and supports hardwired installation or use of a NEMA 6-50 or 14-50 plug. ChargePoint Home Flex is WiFi-enabled for easy management with the ChargePoint app, UL listed for electrical safety, ENERGY STAR certified for efficiency, and backed by a 3-year warranty and 24/7 support. Connecting to ChargePoint

Why should I get a WiFi connected charger?

Connecting your ChargePoint Home to WiFi lets you use the ChargePoint app to:

  • Schedule charging* when electricity is cheapest, set reminders and start charging remotely
  • Find the best time to charge based on local utility rates
  • See how many miles have been added based on your car model
  • Track all your home and public charging info in one place
  • Find and access public charging stations

You need a ChargePoint account to use the app with your home charger.

*Don’t worry: if your WiFi is ever disconnected, ChargePoint will still charge your car on the schedule you’ve set.

Do I need a credit card to use ChargePoint Home? Are there any recurring fees?

Nope! You can create a ChargePoint account to activate your ChargePoint Home without a credit card. When you install a station at a single-family home, you pay for the energy used through your electric utility. Adding a payment method to your ChargePoint account lets you charge away from home at stations with a fee, if you need to.

Can I associate two ChargePoint accounts with one home station?

We currently support one ChargePoint account per home charger. Many ChargePoint Home customers use their station to charge their family’s two EVs.

Compatibility and Specifications

Will ChargePoint home chargers work with my EV?

All ChargePoint home chargers have a standard SAE J1772™ connector that works with all EVs on the road. If you drive a Tesla, just use the J1772 adapter that comes with your car.

Can I charge outdoors?

ChargePoint Home models have been tested in various weather conditions (rated NEMA 3R) and can be installed outdoors by hardwiring the station or plugging into a weatherproof NEMA receptacle.

How big is the station?

ChargePoint Home Flex is 7” wide, 11” high, 5.2” deep and 7” deep when the charging connector is docked.

What are the available charging cable lengths?

ChargePoint Home Flex comes with a 7-meter charging cable.

Which plug type (NEMA 6-50 or 14-50) should I get for plug-in installation?

Either option will work, and your electrician can help determine what's best or which receptacle is already installed in your home. We like NEMA 6-50 because it does not require an additional neutral wire, which may slightly reduce installation cost compared to NEMA 14-50. Outside of EV charging, NEMA 6-50 outlets are commonly used with welders and NEMA 14-50 outlets are commonly used with electric ovens or recreational vehicles.

How can I prepare for installation of Home Flex before I buy?

Talk to your electrician about where you want to install your charger, which circuit rating/amperage setting is right for you (see below), and whether you want to use a plug-in or hardwired installation. Download the ChargePoint app to get ready to activate your station once it’s installed.

ChargePoint Home Flex can be set to charge at 16 amps, 24A, 32A, 40A, 48A or 50A. The higher the amperage, the faster the charging speed, depending on the amperage rating of your car's onboard charger. The 32A and 40A settings are the most popular and work well for most drivers. 48A and 50A offer the fastest charging speeds but may require electrical panel upgrades. If your electrician indicates that your panel has limited capacity, select the highest amperage your panel has room for. Note that plug-in installation can only be used for circuits rated 50A in Canada. Click here for additional installation FAQs.

What is the maximum output power?

ChargePoint Home Flex has a maximum output power of 12 kW (240V, 50A) and can be set to a different power level during installation using the ChargePoint app, as low as to 3.8 kW (240V, 16A).

What is the ChargePoint Home warranty?
