What are the pricing policies and fees I should be aware of?

Last updated: 8/8/2025

Stations managed with the ChargePoint Platform are independently owned, and each station owner or roaming partner decides how much it costs to use their stations. ChargePoint processes the payment for paid charging sessions for the station owner or roaming partner. You can always check pricing in the app and filter for stations that are free and do not charge a fee for use.

Station owners, including stations managed with the ChargePoint Platform or stations from other charging network providers available to ChargePoint drivers through roaming agreements, may choose to charge by the kilowatt hour (kWh), by the hour, using a flat fee, minimum or maximum fee, or an overnight or idle fee. Some connections offer discounted pricing. Some station owners charge one price for the first hour or two of charging and a different price thereafter. Below are terms that may be used in the pricing set by station owners. The pricing for a specific charging station can be found in the mobile app.

  • Energy Rate: Rate charged while the vehicle is actively receiving energy from the charging station. In the US, rates are calculated based on kWh. In Canada rates may be calculated based on time or kWh.
  • Station Time Rate while Connected: Rate charged while a vehicle is connected to the charging station regardless of whether energy is being delivered or not. Rates may be calculated in minutes or hours and may vary while the vehicle is connected via the charging cable.
  • Session Fee: Per session flat fee, set by the station owner, applied upon initiating a charging session.
  • Service Fee: One-time fee that is charged by ChargePoint rather than the station owner when a charging session is initiated.
  • Minimum Fee: The minimum cost of a charging session excluding taxes and ChargePoint Service Fees.
  • Maximum Fee: The maximum cost of a charging session excluding taxes and ChargePoint Service Fees.
  • Overstay Rate: Time-based rate calculated while vehicle is connected to the charging station and applied upon charging completion after a grace period, or after a maximum connection time has been reached.
  • Guest Fee: One-time fee that is charged by ChargePoint rather than the station owner when a charging session is initiated using a contactless credit card tapped on the station without a ChargePoint or roaming partner account.
  • Convenience Fee: One-time fee that is charged by ChargePoint rather than the station owner when a charging session is initiated using a credit card processed with assistance via a call to ChargePoint Driver Support.
  • Free: Station owner has not set a fee to use the station.
